A top LeT commander was killed on Wednesday in a gunfight between the security forces and the militants in south Kashmir's Pulwama district. After the vehicle he was travelling in was intercepted, Ayub Lalhari engaged the security forces in a gun fight and tried to escape through an apple orchard but "he was quickly gunned down", the sources said.

"Two policemen were injured in the initial firing after which an encounter started in which Lelhari was killed", police said.

The region's police chief described the killing as major success and told media Lelhari was one of the most wanted militants.

Earlier, on 5th of August, three militants of the Lashkar module were killed at the Jamia Mohalla Amargarh in Sopore. According to police Abu Ismail is the mastermind of July 10 terror attack on a bus carrying Amarnath pilgrims in Anantnag. The consistent elimination of terrorists in the Kashmir Valley has come as a significant boost to the morale of security forces and it has compelled those intending to join militancy to think twice about their actions. Ghaznavi, 41, was one of the longest surviving militants in the Valley and had successfully mobilized the Hizbul cadres after the killing of Burhan Wani in July past year.

Lelhari's killing is a big set back for the Lashkar-e-Taiba in Kashmir. Yatoo's killing was a big blow to the Hizbul after the death of Burhan Wani past year.

In the first 16-days of this month, 31 people, including 21 militants, five civilians and five security personnel have been killed in militancy related incidents.
