"Trent's going to be a beauty", was Gerrard's assessment of his fellow Liverpudlian.

Alexander-Arnold marked off his European debut on a good note by scoring a free kick for Liverpool in a Champions League qualification encounter against Hoffenheim on Tuesday as the Reds went on to prevail 2-1 in the match.

And Gerrard, speaking on BT Sport, has admitted that a player like Matic would serve as a way of protecting his former side's flimsy back-line. "It is always good to have his backing and support". "It's always good to get compliments from your idol and I am hoping to live up to his words", Alexander-Arnold said.

Having been waved on by more senior colleagues Alberto Moreno and Emre Can he repaid his manager's faith in him with a vital strike.

"It was indescribable to be honest [scoring the opener against Hoffenheim]".

Gerrard also warned Nathaniel Clyne, who is now injured, that he should be concerned his first-team position is under threat from the talented teenager.

"I've been practising free-kicks but I didn't think the senior players would let me take it to be honest but in the end they did and I stepped up and scored and did well for the team", he added.

"I don't tend to think about it".

When asked which Manchester United player he'd like at Liverpool, Gerrard replied: 'Looking at them at the weekend...

Conceding a late goal has left the tie finely balanced for next week's return leg at Anfield and Alexander-Arnold knows they will have to be wary of Germany opponents who play a similar high-tempo pressing game.

'He's been highly touted at Real Madrid who are now the best team in the world so they normally don't make many mistakes so I think the goalkeeper has had a great couple of seasons'. We haven't got a natural holding midfielder at the moment.
