Watch the eclipse without these shades and you could go blind

This will not be noticeable at first without eclipse glasses on.

If viewing the eclipse is bad for unprotected human eyes, do pet owners need to worry about their furry friends during Monday's celestial event?

Thomas More College will also have extra solar eclipse glasses.

Massive crowds are expected at viewing spots across America when the moon passes in front of the sun, blocking its light, the morning of August 21. "The most that we'll see is going to be about 2:45 in the afternoon", said Hassle. But remember: during totality on Monday, the moon will blot out the sun's light. If you're in the 70-mile-wide path of totality, you can look directly at the eclipse during the couple of minutes - around 2 minutes and 40 seconds to be specific - that the moon has completely covered the sun.

"Solar glasses are special lenses that allow the wearer to view an eclipse safely", explained Dr. Jules Winokur, an ophthalmologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

But before you look up on Monday. "Don' try to stare right at it with your eyes", said Hassle. Anything with small holes will do - a colander, for instance, or even an index card with a hole in it. Stand with your back to the sun, hold up your hole-filled object and watch the shadow it casts on the driveway or sidewalk. It is not recommended to make your own glasses as you might have researched, but it is okay to construct projector/viewer, because using this viewer means you won't have to look directly at the sun.

On the positive side, the National Weather Service says the signs are looking very good for clear skies when the eclipse passes over OR and Idaho as well as when it passes over the OH and Tennessee valleys. "So much attention has been focused on the lucky folks who will get to experience eclipse totality, but everyone in an entire hemisphere of the Earth can wave at the Moon as LRO takes our picture!"

"In the museum field we call those sticky memories". They say goggle or helmet glasses, need to, at minimum, be a shade 12.

What if I can't get eclipse glasses?

The sun doesn't become more risky on the day of the eclipse. These can be eclipse glasses, a pinhole viewer, a live stream from the NASA website or watching the shadows of leaves on the ground.
