The mistake, which makes the red-and-white Indonesian flag resemble Poland's, has caused anger in Indonesia where "shameonyoumalaysia" has become a popular hashtag on Twitter.

Khairy said the mistake was "unintentional and it happened due to our carelessness".

Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi also expressed dismay, posting pictures of the mistake on his Twitter account.

"It was a good opening ceremony but spoiled by this fatal negligence that was very painful", he said.

"Bapak Imam, please accept my honest apologies for this".

"We would like to sincerely apologise to the people of Indonesia for the inadvertent error of publishing the wrong flag for Indonesia", SEA Games organisers said in a statement.

"Yes, we have contacted Malaysia Foreign Affairs Minister and we will send a diplomatic note", Retno said on Sunday (20/8).

Indonesian President Joko Widodo told reporters in Jakarta the incident concerned "national pride", and called for an apology.

He also hoped that the incident would not be repeated as the flag is the symbol of a country which should be respected.

"We very much regret the mistake and trust the strong bond between the two countries will further strengthen in the spirit of the SEA Games", they added.
