"To find yourself 3-0 up at half-time at Stamford Bridge doesn't happen very often", the Republic of Ireland global said.

The Dubliner cracked home a terrific volley at Stamford Bridge to help the Clarets to a shock 3-2 win against Chelsea on Saturday, and was named in Martin O'Neill's provisional Republic of Ireland squad for the September World Cup qualifiers with Georgia and Serbia.

Ward finished last season in fine form and Burnley were keen to tie him down beyond the end of 2017/18, something they have done with his two-year extension, while the club also have an option to extend that until 2020.

'It's great and long may it continue, ' Ward said of playing at Turf Moor.

After Burnley avoided relegation easily last season, Ward admitted, "I'm delighted to have signed. It's just great to be part of a club like this at the minute and hopefully we can have another successful season".

"I've not scored many like that in my career".

However, despite showing glimpses of his quality, Defour made just 16 Premier League starts, only one of which came after January, when the midfielder had offered no guarantees about his long-term future at Turf Moor.

Since signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2014, Ward has made 76 appearances for Burnley and his stunner against Chelsea was his fourth for the Clarets.

"We know he can play, his ball for the goal is absolutely fantastic, so we know that".

'Even with all his experience the Premier League is a different animal. He's taken it on'.
