This rumour has gathered pace after Manchester City chairman, Sheikh Mansour reportedly told the fans that the club is working on a world record deal this summer.

However, it was confirmed last week that no new deal has been signed by the Argentina worldwide, and according to Daily Record, Messi "is seriously considering leaving".

The Daily Record say a meeting between Manchester City chiefs and Messi's representatives was held in Barcelona last week, in which the Premier League club enquired about the possibility of bringing the Argentine to England.

Messi, who has a very big €300m release clause in his current contract, is yet to sign a renewal deal with Barcelona, which was scheduled to take place after the star had returned to the club for pre-season training.

The meltdown the club have suffered since is said to be dissuading Messi from putting pen to paper.

And the Catalan club have failed in their attempts to replace him.

Injury to Luis Suarez has highlighted the impact of Neymar's departure on the pitch. "We have to step forward and not look back".

Manchester City have been linked with a bid for the player, and it seems that linking up with Pep Guardiola is a more attractive offer than it once seemed with Neymar leaving the club and Real Madrid looking rather far in the distance in terms of their play, trophies in the past year and their transfer policy.
