Google wants to make a solar eclipse megamovie, and you can help

This will be done using an algorithm developed by Dr. Larisza Krista, Solar Eclipse Image Standardisation and Sequencing (SEISS), who created it to stitch together images taken of the 2012 total solar eclipse in Queensland, Australia.

Google is taking advantage of the expected influx of content to create what it calls the "Eclipse Megamovie 2017". However, 14 states across the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse with almost three minutes of darkness in the middle of the day (around 5pm United Kingdom time) over the course of 100 minutes.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will experience an eclipse of the sun and, given favorable weather conditions, those within the path of totality, which will pass from OR in the North West to SC in the South East will witness the phenomenon of a total solar eclipse, in which the disc of the moon completely covers the sun allowing the sun's corona to be seen.

In a statement on the Project's website, Google said: "We're in the process of collecting photos from all along the path of totality".

To participate in the Megamovie, you'll need an interchangeable lens digital camera (like a DSLR or mirrorless camera), not just a cellphone, and you'll also need to be in the path of the eclipse's totality. They started working on it on Monday afternoon as the first images started to come in, adding to it as more volunteers were able to upload their photos.

The hope is that thousands of images stitched together will give scientists information that's never been available before and give them an incredible data of the sun and how it affects the world. Or download the Eclipse Megamovie Mobile app for Android and iOS to automatically capture and save images.

NASA is also looking for citizen scientists across the country: All you need is a smartphone or tablet, the GLOBE Observer app, and a thermometer.
