With only the top two advancing directly to the World Cup, and Australia sitting in third place, the remaining two qualifiers are must-wins for the Socceroos.

Jedinak missed the Confederations Cup in June with a groin injury, and has yet to play for his English Championship club Aston Villa this season.

"We wanted to give Mile every chance".

"He was very keen".

"And with it being a fairly long trip - and with his long absence from game time - probably he felt he wasn't right".

"I think it would've been great to have him there, he's the captain and been a big part of what we've done over the last four years".

"We've kind of made sure we've got a squad of players who can fill in when needed and we certainly have enough depth in that area to cover his absence", Postecoglou said.

The coach named a seasoned playing group led by 100-cap forward Tim Cahill with winger Awer Mabil and goalkeeper Danny Vukovic the only players yet to represent their country.

Aziz Behich, Adam Federici, Ajdin Hrustic, James Jeggo, Matthew Jurman and Riley McGree were the other players left off the initial 30-man squad.

The Socceroos now sit third in their qualifying group and need to take at least a point from group leaders Japan if they are a chance to automatically seal their spot in Russian Federation next year.

The Socceroos will take on Japan in Saitama on August 31, before returning to Australia to host Thailand at AAMI Park on September 5.
