LG Electronics USA Inc. plans to spent close to $25 million to expand its operation in Oakland County as it aims to grab a bigger share of the electric vehicle and renewable battery markets. The project will mean at least 292 new jobs – 137 LG factory workers in Hazel Park and another related 155 engineers and technicians at the expanded LG R&D Center co-located with LGs vehicle components US headquarters in Troy, Michigan.

LG Electronics' sales for the January-June period increased 43% on the year to $1.5 billion, buoyed largely by business with GM.

The factory project is supported by a $2.9 million capital grant under the Michigan Business Development Program over the next four years. The actions would yield about 290 new jobs, according to the company.

"The construction of the factory will help LG Electronics become the best partner for US carmakers preparing for the era of electric vehicles", the company said. The company which has been losing money from smartphone business has been investing in the vehicle component business.
