Kraft's Super Bowl XXXIX ring ended up on the finger of Vladimir Putin, either as a gift as the Kremlin says, or by heist when the Russian leader tried it on and never removed it in 2005. And, because of Kraft's long friendship with Trump, James said, the president gave the team tours of parts of the mansion that the team's previous winners did not visit.

The New England Patriots and President Donald Trump have long had a special relationship, so it was no surprise that the team brought along a little something extra nice when the team celebrated its Super Bowl LI victory with a White House visit in April.

New England owner Robert Kraft decided after the team's April visit to the White House to have a ring made for Trump so he would have something special to display in his presidential library.

While the team's players and staff received their rings in June to commemorate the 34-28 comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, it's not clear when the president received his ring.

The NFL covers up to $5,000 each for 150 rings for the Super Bowl champion, with the team responsible for any costs over that, according to the AP. The Patriots' 2017 ring — their fifth— is white gold with more than 280 diamonds and a carat weight of 5.1. According to Josten's, the ring manufacturer, it is the largest Super Bowl ring ever made — bigger than the Patriots' 2015 rings that were valued at $36,500 apiece.

Trump's ring was first divulged when former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci responded to a question from the moderator of the Patriots' Reddit board.

Now perhaps Kraft can get his friend to do him a little favor in return.
