Russia's ambassador to Sudan, Mirgayas Shirinsky, was found dead by embassy workers on Wednesday in his residence in the country's capital, Khartoum, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Facebook.

The Sudanese foreign ministry first broke the news and it was later confirmed by the Russian foreign ministry on Wednesday evening. The 62-year-old appeared to have symptoms consistent with a serious heart seizure, he added.

The ambassador, who was born in 1954, "died while he was swimming in his pool at his house", the officer said. Doctors came immediately, but were not able to save him, according to Russian state media.

A report on the circumstances of the ambassador's death will be released as soon as detailed information is gained, the ministry said.

In the early 1990s, he served as minister-counsellor at Russia's embassy in Yemen, and was later appointed consul general to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
