The artist decided to make the movie as a companion piece to his double-album of the same name, which was also released in 1987 but had stalled in sales at mere platinum status.

Through a new arrangement announced Wednesday, premium cable and satellite television network Showtime will beam the film on American TV next month for the first time in more than a decade. The 84-minute flick includes performances shot at Prince's Paisley Park Studios in Minnesota, as well as footage from shows in the Netherlands and Belgium. Hit singles from that classic release included "U Got the Look" (with Sheena Easton), "If I Was Your Girlfriend" and "I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man", in addition to the title song.

SIGN O' THE TIMES captures Prince at a critical juncture in his career, immediately after the disbanding of his group The Revolution and on the heels of Purple Rain and Under the Cherry Moon.

Prince's "Sign o" The Times' concert film is climbing out of the vault in time for its 30th anniversary. The film was never re-issued on DVD in the U.S; for years, the only ways to watch it were via online rip, foreign DVD, or a surviving copy of the 1991 VHS edition.
