Alana Beard of LA Sparks wins WNBA Defensive Player of Year

Los Angeles Sparks guard/forward Alana Beard has been named 2017 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday. She joined two-time victor Lisa Leslie as the second Sparks player to earn the honor. Her win this season comes after receiving 28 votes from a panel of 40 sportswriters and broadcasters nationwide.

Brunson is on the second team for the fifth time, while Moore, who was second in the WNBA in steals with 1.88 per game, has her second appearance. They also ranked second in defensive rating (96.0 points per 100 possessions) and points allowed (75.2 ppg).

Beard averaged 6.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists and shot a career-best 49.7 percent from the field.

Beard and the club received a double bye in the playoffs and will face off against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday evening for the first of a five-game series.

Beard has been selected to the WNBA All-Defensive Team seven times. She has played in 30 or more games in 11 of the 12 seasons she has participated in. Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun received one vote. In honor of being named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, Beard will receive $5,000 and a specially designed trophy from Tiffany & Co.

Fowles, who became the seventh player in league history to reach the 500-block milestone this season, is a first-team selection for the seventh time in her career.
