The incident happened at the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills at 1200 N. 35th Avenue, Hollywood police officials said.

Five Hollywood nursing home residents died Wednesday morning after they fell ill in a building left without air conditioning after Irma blasted South Florida, according to authorities at the scene.

Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief confirmed that five people died, but she noted that it's unclear if it was related to the heat.

Officials said the building has been without power since Hurricane Irma struck earlier this week and may have had air-conditioning issues.

WSVN-TV report that the nursing home did appear to have a back up generator, although it does not appear to have been working.

Hollywood police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

"There's nothing we can do", employee Dave Long told WLPG-TV. "We've been calling and calling ..."

Firefighters are helping evacuate about 100 people from the nursing home, which has been without power since Irma hit the area on Sunday. It's forcast to be 88 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday with a high humidity of 74 percent.
