Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford both opened their Champions League accounts as Manchester United returned to the competition with a 3-0 rout of Basel in their opening Group A match at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Guardiola and Toure have had a fraught relationship at times.

Toure was left out of the squad by Guardiola and the manager raised fresh doubts over the veteran midfielder's future by refusing to make public why.

The 26-year-old Danish global - last year's Eredivisie top scorer with 21 goals in 32 games - will not play in the City match which opens their Group F campaign, Feyenoord announced on Monday.

"I don't blame the ref for the decision: I am not sure he wanted to give the red card immediately but when he saw the boy bleeding I would have made the same decision", he added.

Speaking on Saturday night's Match of the Day, Shearer said Mane's sending off was justified, as the referee was following the rules correctly.

"Yaya was so important last season. It depends on the player".

One player who could make an unexpected return to action is Ederson.

The Senegal winger was shown a straight red card during Liverpool's 5-0 loss away to Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday after his high boot caught goalkeeper Ederson in the face.

Ederson would later play down fears that he had suffered any serious injury in the unfortunate collision, but he has been wearing protective headgear in training.

"Everyone has seen his face, the stitches, the swelling, but he's put a scrum cap on and he's training today".

Captain Vincent Kompany will miss out for City once more due to his latest calf injury setback. I was lucky to be a footballer like my idol Johan Cruyff and I also played under Louis van Gaal and we had many Dutch players at FC Barcelona at the time.
