The versatile 23-year-old prodigy will attempt to sign with an Major League Baseball franchise despite a system in place that would make it rather unusual for a player in his position to do so.

The Yomiuri ShimbunHokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters two-way star Shohei Otani has chose to make the jump to Major League Baseball under the posting system once the season here is over, multiple sources said Wednesday.

Passan delved into the timing and process with the 23-year-old and noted Otani "is giving up literally hundreds of millions of dollars" by coming to the United States at the reported time.

Otani's team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, intends to post him after this season. Hernandez called him the best pitcher and hitter in Japan although pointed out injuries to his hamstring and ankle have forced him to serve primarily as a hitter this season. The 23-year-old two-way superstar now boasts a.346/.416/.574 slash line over 51 games this season and holds a 2.60 career ERA over 522.1 innings in Nippon Professional Baseball. He finished last season with an OPS of 1.004.

So instead of a bidding war, teams will have to make other kinds of pitches to Otani.
