The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer began the multi-network telecast with an impassioned, gospel choir-assisted cover of Bill Withers' "Lean on Me". The 12 words he spoke before singing, however, sparked instant attention. "Anyone who believes that there's no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent", said the singer, who has been without sight since shortly after birth, as he kicked off the hourlong "Hand in Hand" event created to offer relief after hurricanes Harvey and Irma, HuffPost reports.

As if his piano cued the Twitterverse itself, all it took were a few opening notes for replies to start swarming in.

Stars from movies, TV and music gathered across the country for the telethon to raise money for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Beyoncé, a well-known Houston native, shared remarks soon after Wonder's performance also commenting on the issue of climate change.

Regardless of your stance on the topic, Wonder's self-effacing zinger won the night.
