"Target has made significant investments in our business throughout 2017, and our commitment to hire 100,000 team members for the holidays will make shopping at Target even easier and more fun during one of the busiest times of the year", said Janna Potts, Target's chief stores officer, in a statement.

In addition, Target will hire 4,500 team members at the company's distribution and fulfillment centers to replenish products to stores and fulfill digital sales throughout the season. The workers will stock shelves, help customers, pack and load products and fill online orders.

Target a year ago hired 70,000 in-store workers for the holiday period, hiring cautiously along with others such as Macy's Inc M.N. , as most retailers planned for subdued sales amid growing competition from Amazon.com Inc AMZN.O .

Target will hold recruiting events at each of its 1,800 stores from October 13 through 15.

Seasonal employees will get a 10% discount on all Target merchandise and a 20% "wellness discount" on fruits, vegetables, Simply Balanced foods and athletic gear.
