The subject with the lowest numbers now is Ancient Greek, which just 26 students sat this year.

English is the first subject to have undergone a reform in teaching, learning, assessment and grading.

The wait will be finally over for more than 60,000 teenagers today as they will receive the results of their Junior Certificate exams today.

As were down in higher French, German, History and Geography. Fifty-four received 11 As and 240 got 10.

Ahead of the Junior Certificate results being released, Drinkaware appealed to parents to talk to their children about alcohol ahead of their exam results celebrations. Family members, in particular parents, are the single strongest influence on young people's attitudes towards alcohol.

The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD), meanwhile, congratulated the students on their results.

He told Independent.ie: "We've been hosting these events for Junior Cert results night for ten or 15 years, all the events for this age group are strictly no-alcohol allowed". It marks the transition into study for further education at third level, and greater autonomy in their subject choice and knowledge specialisation.

They're being handed out in schools around the country this morning before becoming available online in the afternoon.

In maths and in Irish a trend which sees more students opting for higher level papers continues.
