Cuban state news media say 10 people died across the island as it was being battered by Hurricane Irma.

However, Hurricane Irma has downgraded to a Category 1 storm and has flooded several northern Florida cities with heavy rain and high storm surge on Monday as it headed out of the state after cutting power to millions and ripping roofs off houses. According to meteorologists, hurricanes of this magnitude haven't struck the island since 1932.

Most casualties occurred mainly due to building collapses, the CNN reported.

Residents of "the capital should know that the flooding is going to last more than 36 hours, in other words, it is going to persist", Civil Defense Col. Luis Angel Macareno said late Saturday, noting that the seawater had penetrated some 2,000 feet into parts of Havana.

Hurricane Irma has left a trail of destruction and deaths across the Caribbean and prompted large scale evacuations in the American history.

Fortunately, the region was spared additional damage this weekend, for Hurricane Jose only brushed some islands as it made its way north in the Atlantic.
