Islamic State suicide bombers have attacked one of the bases of the US-led coalition in northern Iraq, but without causing any Iraqi or foreign casualties. According to reports the militants "detonated themselves once they realised they could no longer advance on the military base".

There were several attackers involved, all of whom were killed in the incident in the area of the town of Hawija, said US Army colonel Ryan Dillon.

The bombers attacked a military base housing USA forces in a village near Makhmour, located some 60 km southeast of Mosul, said the official website of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), a major Kurdish party in which the Iraqi President Fuad Masoum is a leading figure.

On Thursday, an IS attack on a checkpoint and restaurant in southern Iraq killed more than 80 people and wounded dozens more.
