Singapore GP: Sebastian Vettel takes pole, Daniel Ricciardo third

The race stewards will investigate the chaotic collisions involving Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen and Kimi Raikkonen which resulted in all three retiring on the first lap.

But it was Vettel's withdrawal that handed Mercedes driver Hamilton the initiative as the Briton, who started fifth on the grid, led after the safety vehicle went back in.

"Obviously it sucks being on the wrong side of the track now, but that's what it is", Vettel shrugged after returning to the paddock. Get the app and get the game.

"Today I'll accept a little bit of defeat but there's still a lot to play for tomorrow", Ricciardo said.

"I got everything I could out of the vehicle".

Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo claimed third and Kimi Raikkonen may be called upon to hold up Hamilton, having qualified in fourth, with Valtteri Bottas alongside his fellow Silver Arrow in the third row.

The former championship-winning team consider Singapore to be one of their best venues to secure a second victory of the season and have found a purple patch at the twisty Marina Bay street track reminiscent of their glory years in Formula One. The characteristics of our auto don't like this track, that's for sure.

"We were so focused on the issue Daniel was managing, it was just a question of getting the vehicle to the finish".

But Hamilton kept his cool to not only remain in charge of the championship - a scenario which appeared nearly impossible here on Saturday night - but extended his lead to more than a single victory.

"But we didn't have the pace we showed on Friday, we struggled to look after the tyres - when able to punch out a good laptime, I couldn't maintain it, whereas Lewis could answer and answer again".

"Grid position is crucial but still it is a long race. I am not too bothered where other people are".

"We know the auto is not quick enough for the podium - that's a fact".

But Hamilton shot off after the restart to maintain the gap from Ricciardo and as he finally took the chequered flag, the grandstand came to its feet and fireworks lit up the night sky. Whatever the cause, the German was out of the race - and his title rival in the lead...
