Kalashnikov died in 2013 at the age of 94 and towards the end of his life had expressed remorse for the devastation wrought across the world by people with his gun in their hands. "His extraordinary natural talent, simplicity, honesty and organizational talent allowed him to create a whole line of weapons to protect the fatherland", Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky said, according to TASS.

The 35-million-rouble (£450,000) statue was financed by the Russian Military-Historical Society, a patriotic group set up by the Kremlin, and erected on Sadovaya Karetnaya Street.

"Now, thanks to the Kalashnikov Monument, this place will be easily pinpointed on any map".

A small crowd gathered on a busy junction in central Moscow for the unveiling of a statue of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the AK-47 rifle, on Tuesday morning, September 19. The composition also features the images of the terrestrial globe and Saint George.
