Senior Gujarat politician Shankersinh Vaghela who dumped the Congress in July announced formation of a third front in the state, Jan Vikalp, for elections to the 182-member assembly later this year-end.

Though Jan Vikalp has claimed to be against both the BJP and the Congress, considering Vaghela's open support to the BJP in the Rajya Sabha and Presidential elections, the forum and the third front may end up advantaging the BJP and damaging the prospects of the Congress in the upcoming assembly elections.

Addressing the media after joining the party on Tuesday, Vaghela said, "It is a myth to say that an alternative political force can't work in Gujarat".

With Vikalp as in their various tweets, the people of the state are seems to be demanding a substitute political party or leader come up to serve them and this potenational seems to be expecting from former Chief Minister Shankersinh Vaghela.

Later, during the election to the upper house where Congress bigwig Ahmed Patel was the official candidate, eight others, including Vaghela, cross-voted for BJP candidates. "We are planning for not just 2017 polls but beyond that too", Patel had said earlier.

"It is a myth to say that an alternative political force can not work in Gujarat". Reportedly, Vaghela's supporters wanted him to join the group so that people's voices are heard. "We would hold primaries and the candidates would be decided by the people themselves".

Though Vaghela's current move is seen to benefit BJP by eating in to votes of Opposition parties, sources say that his relationship with BJP has run into rough patch post loss of Balwantsinh Rajput - Congress rebel turned third BJP candidate in Rajya Sabha polls. The Jan Vikalp website says that over the last 70 years, neither the BJP nor the Congress has given "anything except atrocities, exploitation, poverty, fear, hunger and corruption". However, 11 of them had joined the BJP. It has not been registered as a political party.
