Barcelona reportedly tried to sign Atletico Madrid stars Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann this summer during what was ultimately a disappointing transfer window for the Catalan giants.

The France global is regarded as one of Europe's top forwards at the moment after a prolific few years at the Vicente Calderon, but made a decision to stay with his current club for this season.

Jose Mourinho appeared to be on the cusp of signing Griezmann, who scored Atletico's first goal at their new stadium over the weekend, back in June, but the Frenchman made a decision to remain loyal to Diego Simeone after the La Liga side's transfer ban was upheld.

Barça lost Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain, were consistently rebuffed in their attempts to land Marco Verratti and Philippe Coutinho, while €105m new signing Ousmane Dembele isn't expected to play again until 2018 after sustaining a serious injury in only his third appearance.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague confirmed earlier in the summer that Griezmann would be a Man United player if it wasn't for Atletico's ban.

It was also reported that Lionel Messi was a major factor behind Barca's bid for the 26-year-old.

'Griezmann didn't feel able to leave Atletico, ' Olhats said. 'He's been integral to them and has shown his commitment to the club at a time when they couldn't sign players.

'Without the Federation Internationale de Football Association sanctions he would have gone'.
