A children's hospital in San Diego, California, unveiled a collection of remote controlled luxury mini cars on Tuesday that allow its young patients to "drive" themselves to the operating room, reported Reuters.

The cars were operated by the doctor or nurse, who brought them in for their surgery.

"It's not just for the child to feel like this is a fun thing to do", added Dr. Carvalho.

Children have their pick of a BMW, Mercedes or Lamborghini, ensuring their ride to the operating room is a luxurious one.

The cars were donated by the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Agencies through a teddy bear drive that raised money and stuff animals for the children at the hospital.

'But the stress of surgery falls on the parents too.

The hospital said the kids love to use the cars.

The fancy sets of wheels, which are actually operated by a nurse or doctor, are part of a new program created to relax children before their operations.

"Just the fact that. we're able to help our children and their families in the operating room relax a little bit more, and actually have fun when they're going to the operating room, is just tremendous". "Knowing that they're doing so well and that they're happy - it makes us happy, too".
