Revamped Khelo India, bonus for railway employees among key Cabinet decisions

Each athlete selected under the scheme shall receive an annual scholarship worth Rs 5 lakh for 8 consecutive years.

Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore today said the Khelo India initiative, which focused on infrastructure development till now, will look to ensure all-round growth in its revamped form.

In yet another boost for sports and sportspersons by the Modi government, Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister approves revamped Khelo India programme at a cost of Rs.1,756 crore for period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

The programme also aims to cover about 20 crore children in the age group of 10 to 18.

Earlier in the evening, while addressing the media in the presence of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Health Minister JP Nadda at Shastri Bhavan, Rathore said the decision to revamp Khelo India has been taken with twin goals: Sports For All and Sports For Excellence. "Sports and education will be mixed".

The revamped Khelo India programme, which aims at mainstreaming sports as a tool for individual development, community development, economic development and national development, would impact the entire sports ecosystem, including infrastructure, community sports, talent identification, coaching for excellence, competition structure and sports economy, the Government added. Taking to Twitter, Kohli also lauded Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore over the Cabinet clearance granted to this scheme.

The victor of the silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games said under the scheme, efforts will be made to upgrade and educate coaches at the community level.
