The BJP on Thursday made a decision to field Swaran Singh Salaria as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election from Gurdaspur in Punjab. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was the first to announce Maj Gen Suresh Khajuria (retd) as its candidate for the seat on September 17.

Vinod Khanna, who was Gurdaspur MP between 1998-2009 and 2014-2017, passed away on April 27 this year.

On Wednesday, the Congress nominated its Punjab unit president Sunil Jakhar, a loyalist of Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, to contest Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-election scheduled on October 11. Friday is the last day for filing of nominations for the elections. The leaders said that every Congress worker is indebted to the party high command for taking decision as per the wishes of every congressman. He said that Congress will wrest back the Gurdaspur seat from BJP to prove that NDA government has lost popularity in Nation because of demonetization and implementation of GST. Sources within the BJP say Salaria had the strong backing of yoga guru Ramdev. In 1999, he was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from the same constituency. Salaria has earlier remained BJP national executive member and is a businessman from Chauhan village in Bhoa assembly segment falling under the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat. He has also served earlier as chairman of the Punjab state commission for protection of child rights. "While Salaria and Khanna were the two names before the party, it was felt that a local should be fielded at a time when the Congress has strongly made a comeback in Punjab", said a senior BJP functionary. Sujanpur assembly seat was bagged by the BJP and the Batala went to BJP's alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal.
