Most of the 3,000 additional U.S. troops being deployed to Afghanistan under President Donald Trump's new strategy to shore up security are on their way to the war-torn country, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said on Monday.

The extra troops would bring the total number of US forces in Afghanistan to more than 14,000.

American combat operations against the Taliban officially ended in 2014, but over 8,000 United States special forces remain in the country backing Afghan troops.

Last month, President Donald Trump said that he would take a "conditions-based approach" to evaluating troop levels in Afghanistan, as opposed to an approach based on what he called "arbitrary timetables".

The extra troops would bolster the Afghan military in its fight against the Taliban, al Qaeda and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.
