Elton John recalled the "guilt and regret" he felt being married to a woman as he urged Australians to legalise same-sex marriage in a heartfelt Instagram post on Thursday (21Sep17).

Sir Elton is now in Australia to perform four public shows in north Queensland, just six months after the region was devastated by Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

"Many years ago, I chose Australia for my wedding to a wonderful woman for whom I have so much love and admiration", he continued.

"To be worthy of someone's love, you have to be fearless enough and clear eyed enough to be honest with yourself and your partner", he shared.

He added: "Almost 24 years ago, I met the person with whom I could be fully myself".

"It felt like that fact was accepted by the world", he writes. For David and I, being able to openly love and commit to one another, and for that to be recognised and celebrated is what makes life truly worth living.

"I love its spirit, it's lack of pretence, it's passion", he wrote in a Facebook post. That acceptance and support makes us want to be as kind, responsible and productive members of society, as well as the best parents, that we can be.

On tour Down Under, he said gay marriage was an "expression not of desire but of love". Many years ago, I chose Australia for my wedding to a wonderful woman for whom I have so much love and admiration.

He went on to say that nearly 24 years later, he met David Furnish, and they married in 2014.

"I love Australia. I love its spirit, it's lack of pretence, it's passion", the singer concluded.

The Rocket Man, 70, who Wednesday Renate Blauel in Sydney in 1984, revealed the damage their union did, as he felt he was forced to stay in the closet until they split in 1988.

Sir Elton also reflected on his love for husband and Canadian filmmaker David Furnish, who he married in 2014.

But John later changed his view and helped campaign for same-sex marriage in the United Kingdom, saying that "partner is a word that should be reserved for people you play tennis with".

Kylie Minogue has also urged people to vote yes, sharing a photo of herself wearing a shirt in support of same-sex marriage a year ago.

The couple have two children, both sons born to surrogate mother using donated eggs.

In 1976, Elton John told Rolling Stone he was bisexual.
