Since the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) was founded in 2013, the historic Grain Silo Complex has been redesigned and redeveloped to accommodate the world's biggest contemporary art museum exclusively devoted to African art. Zeitz MOCAA is the first major museum in Africa dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, and also the first African institution to acknowledge new mediums through the establishment of different centers and institutes within the overall museum. Indeed, the waterfront is South Africa's most visited destination and would surely boost the number of visits to the museum by tourists.

The museum was much anticipated in Africa and could weigh significantly in the debate on the restitution of African art pieces to the continent. That said, in a country with few collectors, nearly no museum-going public and no public funding for the arts, this has been a clever and entrepreneurial way to go about building a museum that will have lasting resonance for everyone interested in art. "So far, African art works necessarily had to be sent to other continents, in worldwide museums, for visibility and credibility sakes", among others.

However, an acquisition fund was set to raise the necessary funds to secure a permanent collection.
