Leclerc is the runaway leader of the Formula 2 championship and is now 59 points clear with four races remaining.

The Ferrari-backed 19-year-old from Monaco has dominated the support series this year and is strongly tipped to race for Sauber, who use the Italian manufacturer's engines and have close ties to Maranello, in 2018. A move up to the F1 grid with Sauber seems likely to be his next step given the fact the team is due to switch to Ferrari power next year.

Ferrari Driver Academy star Charles Leclerc will test for Sauber in Formula One during the coming months. Marcus Ericsson, Sauber's other race driver, will miss P1 in Sepang while Sauber run Leclerc.

The current FIA Formula 2 Championship leader and reigning GP3 Series champion will also take part in sessions in the United States, Mexican and Brazilian Grand Prix, and although the driver he will replace in those three events has yet to be confirmed, he will take over the auto usually driven by Marcus Ericsson at the Sepang International Circuit.

Sauber is the only team on the grid yet to confirm either of its drivers for 2018. Talented Mercedes junior Wehrlein looks unlikely to retain his seat despite out-qualifying Ericsson 8-4 and scoring the team's only points of the season in Spain and Azerbaijan.
