Pep Guardiola hopes Sergio Aguero can become Manchester City's new record goalscorer in front of his home crowd, but the manager also feels the striker should not be overly concerned with individual accolades.

Aguero is on the verge of becoming City's all-time record scorer, going into Saturday's home match against Crystal Palace two goals behind Eric Brook, the current holder.

Aguero netted the 10th - yes 10th - hat-trick of his City career at Watford last weekend and now leads the Premier League scoring charts alongside Romelu Lukaku with five.

"The record is going to be broken, where, I don't know", he said.

Yet personal recognition has eluded Aguero, despite his consistency since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Aguero was not named among the 15 forwards on the shortlist for this year's FIFA FIFPro World11, which is decided by the professional players.

"So the best present is when you have the feeling that the team-mates love you and you feel you have helped them".

"Recognition in the media and prizes are OK for ten minutes and then after that they disappear".

"So he's not in the Fifpro team this week".

The forward faced something of a battle to prove his worth to Guardiola, who demanded that the striker increase his work off the ball, and also lost his place in the Argentina starting line-up, as they struggle to qualify for next year's World Cup.

Guardiola said: "All we can say is just to convince him to be involved in the way we want to play - not to be (just) like a striker heading the ball in the box and scoring a goal, but to try to make one high press in the right moment to help to win the ball as quickly possible, to attack as quickly as possible and to be involved in the process to play football".

"Always I encourage.my players.to fight for [the] recognition of his team-mates", he said. They have to be involved in the play.

"Guardiola admits that Aguero does not always look the most enthusiastic player on the training ground, but always sees him come to life on a matchday".

"All the players in the world decide to play football for one reason - to play with the ball". He had it in the past with Argentina, his mother and father gave him that talent. "You have to provoke scoring more goals in the way that we play".
