According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, Caldwell and the Detroit Lions agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension months ago that was first disclosed Saturday.

That's the way it ought to be.

Now 2-0 for the first time since 2011, the Lions will set their sights on a second straight winning season and the franchise's first playoff win since 1992.

But Caldwell shouldn't have been put in a so-called "prove it" situation.

The Lions have liked what they've seen from head coach Jim Caldwell.

Cooter nearly instantly unlocked the potential in quarterback Matthew Stafford, and that alone is something Caldwell should be able to hang his hat on. Caldwell has a 29-22 record with Detroit and has made the playoffs in two of his first three seasons at the helm.

The only remaining question is, why keep it secret? His career record with the team stands at 29-21, including a 9-7 record past year. If the idea is to extend him before the season to get rid of distractions, not telling anybody means there will still be distractions.
