The woman is a welfare officer at the school and sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Humberside Police said a 16-year-old girl has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is being questioned by officers.

Police and ambulances were called to the Winterton Community Academy in North Lincolnshire after the 61-year-old woman was injured before 9am.

Neither the school nor police gave further details about the victim or her injuries.

Winterton Community Academy, formerly Winterton Comprehensive School, has 518 pupils aged 11 to 16-years-old.

"Staff at the school and police officers responded to this isolated incident very quickly, and one person is now in custody as a result".

"There was no disruption to any other children, non of whom witnessed the incident".

The attack happened in a school office while children were in classrooms, local paper the Scunthorpe Telegraph reported, quoting Chief Superintendent Christine Wilson at the scene.

Parents of pupils at Winterton Community Academy received a text message from the school to say an incident had taken place.

The school's head, Gareth Morris, has sought to reassure parents and the community after what he described as an "isolated incident".

"We will support our staff directly affected and will be keeping parents updated throughout the day", he said.
