E-commerce major Amazon said on Sunday that its ongoing festive sales have been the "biggest till date", driven by strong growth in segments like smartphones, large appliances and fashion.

During 2017 BBD, Flipkart has claimed that it has sold products worth 70% of the entire e-commerce market in India during the five-day sale period and also that BBD sales have doubled as compared to a year ago.

According to data collated by RedSeer Consulting, Flipkart is likely to have lived up to its claim. It also said that the e-commerce market during the festive sales period has grown by 35% over the a year ago. The sales were launched by India's leading e-commerce players Flipkart and Amazon.

About 83% respondents said they would purchase fashion products from Flipkart, while 17% said they would do so from Amazon.

Flipkart again seems to have pipped Amazon in sales for 2017Flipkart said that "it has doubled its sales this year as compared to last year however did not share any numbers on orders, units shipped or the value of goods sold".

Amazon's four-day festive sale, which commenced on 21 September, clashed with those by rivals Flipkart and Paytm.

This, it said, was due to the higher level of awareness among consumers and sellers alike regarding the Flipkart Big Billion Day sales. And its "prime membership" was the highest selling which had a 4X growth in sales since previous year. The company offered more discounts and sales exclusively to Amazon Prime members.

While Flipkart may claim victory during the festive sales period, it remains to be seen at what cost did this come at.
