Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder have apologized after a twisted birth control story drew major backlash.

Ultimate vampire power couple Nikki Reed and Ian Somerhalder have been forced to issue an apology after they caused offense during their latest interview.

The actors welcomed daughter Bodhi Soleil in July (17), and in a recent interview on Dr. Berlin's Informed Pregnancy Podcast, they were asked about when they chose to start trying to conceive.

The apology comes after Reed initially defended her husband in a series of tweets calling out an unnamed "irresponsible journalist" for "speaking on my behalf in a story admittedly taken out of context for the goal of stirring up drama WITHOUT my approval", as well as the media in general for turning Somerhalder's story into gossip.

The pair made headlines last week when they appeared on Dr. Elliot Berlin's Informed Pregnancy podcast. He said his friends filmed the actress' reaction as he flushed her birth control pills down the toilet.

"To anyone who has been affected by reproductive coercion, we are deeply sorry".

"We decided that we wanted to have children together, and it was just time", Somerhalder explained. "But unbeknownst to poor Nikki, she didn't realise that I was gonna go in her purse and take out her birth control and pop them (push out all the pills)". The actors issued a joint statement on the internet, saying that women's rights is a matter of great importance to both of them and they never expected that something that was said in a "goofy moment" would be taken out of turn. It is something that we have been very vocal about and something that is very close to our hearts.

But they were quite clear about the bottom line: "We are two happily married people who chose TOGETHER to have a baby".

Reed announced her pregnancy in May 2017 and the couple welcomed a daughter, Bodhi Soleil Reed Somerhalder, in July.
