On Friday, the acting head of Homeland Security Elaine Duke called the federal response "really a good news story in terms of our ability to reach people and the limited number of deaths that have taken place in such a devastating hurricane". Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help.

Only moments after Trump's self-congratulatory remarks were broadcast, the mayor of San Juan went on television to unleash a damning indictment of the U.S. government's treatment of the 3.5 million Americans on the island. She said Puerto Rico's relationship with the USA mainland is important - but the island should be wary of becoming too dependent.

Trump also lashed out at comments made by San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz at a press conference on Friday.

Members of the board in charge of resolving Puerto Rico's debt crisis met this week with Trump administration officials and members of the U.S. Congress to ask for more financial assistance for the hurricane-struck island, the panel said on Saturday.

"Yesterday we saw a mayor who said people were drinking out of the river because they need water", Mr. Jackson said.

On Thursday, Trump announced that he and First Lady Melania Trump would visit Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

"And if it doesn't stop, and if we don't get the food and the water into people's hands, what we are going to see is something close to a genocide".

Trump just handed them an engraved invitation with his tweets this morning.

"The people of Puerto Rico are dying", Soto said.

My Administration, Governor @RicardoRossello, and many others are working together to help the people of Puerto Rico in every way.

"I respectfully disagree with President Trump and I am sure that he is not getting the data that we are seeing in the streets".

US President Donald Trump has been heavily criticized for his response to an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico in the wake of Category 4 Hurricane Maria, which knocked out electricity to over one million people.

Thousands of islanders have received food and water as an aid bottleneck began to ease.

"She has been working 24/7", tweeted "Hamilton" star and creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is of Puerto Rican descent.

Puerto Ricans were angered by Trump's delay in finally waiving a USA law that bars foreign-flagged ships from delivering aid to USA ports.

However, Cruz stated that help is not arriving fast enough.

It closed with a Trump-signed message of support: "We are with you Puerto Rico!"

Carmen Febo San Miguel, a doctor in Philadelphia and executive director of Taller Puertorriqueno, said she followed media coverage of hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria over the past month, including a telethon for victims of Harvey that raised millions of dollars, and wondered where such efforts were for her home.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello has called the destruction to the island unprecedented, though the Republican has praised the USA government's relief efforts.
