With less than a week before the A-League season kicks off, Popovic quit the club to take the reigns of the Super Lig strugglers, throwing the A-League club's season into disarray.

The club is third from bottom of the Turkish Supa Liga, having won just one game in seven this season.

Popovic, who has been with the Wanderers since their foundation year, has turned down offers from Asia and Europe in recent years but appears to have made a decision to take up a contract in Turkey with a club that has won just a single game from the seven they've played this season.

Having turned down a succession of offers from Asia and England, Popovic has chose to seek a new challenge after five seasons at the Wanderers.

The club will have to move quickly to find a successor, with Socceroos assistant Ante Milicic - who was Popovic's No 2 at Western Sydney in the club's first season - certain to figure prominently in discussions.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Popovic had a handshake agreement with Wanderers chairman Paul Lederer to leave the club if the right offer came along.

However the championship eluded Popovic, with the club losing three A-League grand finals in 2013, 2014 and 2016.
