GM Puts Fuel Cells To Work With Autonomous Surus Concept

This is GM's second-generation hydrogen fuel cell.

The hydrogen fuel cell electric truck platform developed by General Motors can be adopted by a family of commercial vehicles used for cargo delivery and commercial freight, the automaker said on Friday.

SURUS, short for Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure, features two electric drive units, a next-generation fuel cell system, and a lithium-ion battery.

GM will continue testing the SURUS truck through the spring of 2018.

GM announced SURUS on Tuesday as part of its plans to introduce 20 all-electric passenger vehicles by 2023.

SURUS leverages GM's newest Hydrotec fuel cell system, autonomous capability and truck chassis components to deliver high-performance, zero-emission propulsion to minimize logistical burdens and reduce human exposure to harm.

GM has unveiled a new fuel-cell platform specifically created to be a flexible chassis that can serve both commercial and military needs for a versatile zero-emissions truck. The SURUS platform is equally well-suited for adaptation to military environments where users can take advantage of flexible energy resources, field configurability and improved logistical characteristics. Like the ZH2, it is also capable of providing an exportable power source and generating water. It will also have autonomous capabilities that could allow multiple SURUS vehicles to operate in a digitally-tethered platoon, or convoy.

Military testing has shown the ZH2 reduced acoustic non-detection distance by 90 percent compared to current military vehicle in operation. Much of that is due to the electric powertrain, which produces less noise than a diesel engine. Although the technical specifications released thus far are not comprehensive, GM says that SURUS will store enough H2 for more than 400 miles (643km) of range.
