They have won control of positions and heights parallel to the main road linking Deir al-Zor and al-Mayadin, located on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, the media unit said. The ISIS command structure is believed to be based in the city, which is on the Euphrates river.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major-General Igor Konashenkov said on Wednesday that USA support for terrorists is the main obstacle for routing the self-styled Islamic State organization from Syria.

"To hit these targets, Velikiy Novgorod and Kolpino submarines of the Black Sea Fleet have performed two multiple launches of Kalibr cruise missiles from the Mediterranean", ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov said, according to RT.

A statement from the opposition, said: "The warplanes of the Russian occupation committed a monstrous massacre near al-Ashira city south of Deir ez-Zor, which led to the killing of no less than 50 civilians, mostly women and children".

"These are the terrorists' command posts, large ammunition depots and hangars with Daesh armored vehicles. A precision strike carried out by a Su-34 bomber has eliminated 49 gunmen, including seven leaders of militant units of al-Nusra's eastern sector", the ministry said.

Another 15 civilians were killed on Thursday when a missile struck the government-held Qusour neighborhood, which is besieged by ISIS, the AP reported, citing the activist-run Deir Ezzor 24 monitoring group.

It is the latest of a series of accusations traded as Russian-backed troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the USA -allied, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces battle IS fighters in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor near the Iraqi border.
