AP minister opens two gates of Srisailam dam

The crest gates of the Srisailam reservoir had to be lifted after the copious inflow of water from Jurala and Sunkesula brimmed the water level at the reservoir at 884.7 feet against its capacity of 885 feet.

According to the Irrigation Department officials, two gates were lifted for about 10 feet each to let the water pass through the spillway resulting in a lovely sight at the dam.

Devineni Uma, Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Minister today performed puja at the dam site and supervised the lifting of two crest gates to release water downstream into the Nagarjunasagar dam. The water will reach Nagarjunasagar project.

In a recent development, letting out 56000 cusecs of flood water on Thursday, the flood gates of the Srisailam project were lifted. Outflows were recorded at 1,44,160 cusecs with 55,966 cusecs from spillway, abuout 75,250 cusecs from the two power houses, 11,000 cusecs from Pothireddypadu and about 2,000 cusecs for Kalwakurhty and Handri-Neeva lifts. The gross storage of the reservoir is 210 tmc as against the gross capacity of 213 tmc.

Fresh inflows from dams in Karnataka and other sources has further boosted dam storage forcing irrigation authorities to release water.
