Ryan Thomas, who left the Coronation Street cast in 2016, has bagged a role on Australian soap Neighbours.

The soap star's character has also been revealed as he arrives in Erinsborough to confront a hard chapter from his past.

"I grew up watching the show so to get the chance to join the cast is awesome", said an excited Thomas today. "I was on holiday with my daughter when I got a call from my agent about the part. I spoke to the producer and found out more - it was very different to anything I'd played before and I can't wait to start filming!"

Coming to Ramsay Street as a loner with dark secrets, Ryan steps into the role of Rafael Humphreys; a man who's on the Street to confront a hard chapter that took place in his past.

His first "Neighbours" scenes are set to air "early next year". "It was quite a deep, dark story - that really interested me".

Last month, it was reported that Ryan was Ramsey Street-bound, and would be playing the part of Raphael Humphreys in the Aussie soap, a year after stepping down from his role in "Corrie".

Commissioning Editor at Channel 5, Greg Barnett, said of his addition: "With his good looks and Corrie years under his belt, Ryan is the ideal handsome devil".

"His arrival in Erinsborough marks the start of darker time for a particular Ramsay Street favourite".

Most recently, Ryan appeared in Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls, which is where he met his reality star girlfriend. Prepare to be gripped'.

Neighbours airs on weekdays on Channel 5.
