Momoa then jokes: "And rape lovely women and have them fall in love with me, you know what I mean?"

A video from a 2011 Comic-Con panel has resurfaced in which he jokes about getting to "rape handsome women" while portraying his fierce warlord character on "Game of Thrones".

The footage, filmed at the 2011 Game Of Thrones panel at San Diego Comic Con, shows the Hawaiian-born actor - who played Khal Drogo in the HBO show between 2011 and 2012 - describing the merits of fantasy as a genre.

Although the video was taken six years ago, it gained traction on Thursday when it was posted by Twitter user @peeanofreek.

As the video garnered more than 2,000 retweets and likes each, Twitter users condemned Momoa's comments.

Others criticized those in the audience and onstage who laughed instead of calling Momoa out.

And it has also left many Momoa fans with their heads in their hands and disappointed at his decision to joke about such a violent crime.

"It was very hard because I've never done that to anyone", he said in a 2011 interview with the New York Daily News. "But the good news was I'm not a rapist". It really did not feel good. "I don't like women crying when I'm making love to them". As the Internet erupts in a much-needed discussion over the pervasiveness of sexual assault, as well as the complicity of those who enable it, it will surprise absolutely no one if more videos of powerful men saying disgusting things continue to turn up.
