Amazon said on Friday it planned to open a new fulfillment center in Bolton, north west England, in 2018 and will begin recruiting 1,200 permanent jobs in the latest expansion in Britain.

All permanent Amazon fulfilment centre employees earn £8.15 an hour or more after two years of employment, with pay increasing from a starting salary of £7.65 an hour and above. "Robots help speed order processing time and reduce walking by employees by moving the shelves to employees, reducing the time taken to stow items for sale or pick them for new customer orders". Some 1,200 people will work at the site, Amazon's third in the North West, in roles from operations managers and engineers to HR and IT specialists.

"Our ability to expand in the North West of England is the result of two things: incredible customers and an outstanding workforce", said Stefano Perego, Amazon's director of United Kingdom customer fulfilment.

The Bolton fulfilment centre follows the launch of new centres in Daventry, Doncaster, Warrington and Tilbury this year, marking a push to increase its network in the United Kingdom in an effort to expand its selection of good from SME's on Amazon Marketplace. The retailer is also to open a new centre at Severn Beach, Bristol next year, also featuring Amazon Robotics.

Investment dollars aside, Amazon will also trial state-of-the-art technology in Bolton.
