"We prepare year round for the holidays and we're excited to hire for over 120,000 positions this season to help delight our customers", said Dave Clark, Amazon's senior vice president of global customer fulfillment, in a statement.

Shoppers this year will shell out more on gifts during the holidays, according to industry surveys, as a tightening job market, rising home prices and stock markets that are hovering at record highs boost consumer confidence, increasing their intent and ability to spend.

Last year, thousands of people who were hired during the holiday season transitioned into full-time employees after the holidays.

Earlier this fall Walmart, the nation's largest employer, said it would fill its need for more seasonal help by giving additional hours to its existing part-time workers, rather than bringing on additional employees.

The hiring events are set for 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at all Target stores. Those who attend the hiring events can get interviewed on the spot and may even receive a conditional job offer.

While seasonal hires, some of the jobs could become permanent.

"We look forward to meeting thousands of candidates in communities across the country this weekend at local hiring events", said Janna Potts, Target's chief stores officer.
