On Thursday night, Gurung told the local media that he will appear before his supporters on October 30, and urged the hill people to hit the roads in lakhs on that day.

A police personnel succumbed to his injuries after fierce clashes broke out between GJM supporters loyal to supremo Bimal Gurung and the state police in Darjeeling hills, officials said.

The violence erupted when GJM workers opened fire on cops after the police raided a hideout at a Lepcha Basti near Takvar. Gurung has been hiding since August after cases under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were registered against him for his alleged involvement in various bomb blasts in Darjeeling and adjoining areas.

Summary: The clashes began inside a forest at Lapchey Bustee, about 20 km from Darjeeling town.

The raid took place after the West Bengal Police received an intelligence input that absconding GJM chief Bimal Gurung might be hiding in the workshop, the report added.

More details are awaited.
