(Ecofin Agency) - The will be no elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) before 2019.

"The council expects a speedy publication of the electoral timetable and the implementation of the confidence-building measures".

The 15-member council agreed on a renewed message for the swift and full implementation of the December 31, 2016 agreement, which is essential to a credible electoral process and to the peace and stability of the DRC, Delattre told reporters after closed-door Security Council consultations.

The schedule outlined by the electoral commission would torpedo an agreement between President Joseph Kabila's representatives and his opponents that the election would take place before the end of this year. He vowed that they will fight against it and make sure elections are held this year. We are already into overtime.

He said elections were supposed to be held last year but were first pushed to the end of this year and are surprisingly now being postponed to mid 2019.

Maman Sidikou, the special representative of the United Nations secretary-general for the DRC, saw the re-emergence of a climate of political uncertainty and tensions in the DRC as a result of the challenges related to the implementation of the December 31 agreement.

Following a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, French Ambassador Francois Delattre called on Kinshasa to quickly release a full timetable for what he said must be "credible" elections.
