"I found out about Harvey about a year ago and I'm ashamed that I didn't say anything right then", Fonda, 79, told Christiane Amanpour during an interview for CNNMoney on Thursday. "This goes on all the time", she said.

"It's very hard to come forward when you've been a victim of sexual abuse because you get dragged over the coals, you have to prove, you have to justify".

In the past week, multiple women have come forward accusing Weinstein of rape, assault and other misconduct.

Jane Fonda says she first heard about Harvey Weinstein's alleged misbehavior a year ago and she's ashamed she hasn't spoken about it until now.

Fonda said actresses had failed to speak out earlier because they feared for their careers, before adding: "There's another reason which is even more insidious - that you won't be believed". "You realize what I'm feeling is ok because this person is sharing my pain", she said.

She goes on to slam the double standards in Hollywood and the everyday situations faced by women across the globe.

Fonda told Amanpour that Weinstein's pattern of abuse is not an isolated phenomenon.

"Let's not think that this is some unique, horrific ..."

The Oscar-winning star said she regretted not speaking out when she first learned of accusations against the movie mogul from a fellow actress, who has since made her own allegations public. "This goes on all the time, this male entitlement in Hollywood and everywhere - in offices and businesses all over the world, in bars, in restaurants, in stores women are assaulted, abused, harassed", she said.

She cautioned against characterizing Weinstein's years-long abuse as being "some unique, horrific" case, saying "this goes on all the time". There are documented claims that Trump has harassed and insulted women, and he was also famously caught on tape bragging about being able to grab and touch women due to his social status.

"You can do anything", he boasted.

"I think it's because if I had I would have had to out someone that wasn't prepared to speak out".

"It's unacceptable and we can't ever forget that and we have to stand up to them".
