The Brisbane Supreme Court in Australia on Friday (13 October) sentenced a man to seven years in prison for punching a teenager in the head, leading to his death.

Renata was with friends when he approached Mr Miller in the early hours of a Sunday morning in the Fortitude Valley nightclub district.

The 18-year-old suffered massive brain trauma, with his family making the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support the following day.

Armstrong Renata, 23, is one of the first offenders to be sentenced for the charge of unlawful striking causing death, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

In an emotional hearing, family members on both sides cried as a tearful Steve Miller read aloud victim impact statements written by he and his wife about their loss.

In summing up Justice Helen Bowskill noted Renata's criminal history, which includes assault occasioning bodily harm.

He said Cole's life was "violently cut short" in an act that marked the start of a "nightmare" for his loved ones and friends.

She said she was engulfed by grief whenever left alone and remembered her son as a lovely, quiet and gentle young man.

She described being engulfed by grief whenever she is left alone and said her son was a attractive, quiet and gentle young man.

A softly spoken Renata also addressed the court, apologising to the Millers and to Cole's friend, Mr Pace, who had tried to resuscitate his mate in the Valley that night.

"It's been a long 20 months since then (and) I know my children suffer everyday".

He then read his wife's statement in which she described having to take anti-depressants and sleeping tablets to cope with the devastation of her loss.

"From the very bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry", he said.

It comes after Renata's co-accused, Daniel Maxwell, walked from court in August after being handed an 18-month suspended sentence for starting the fight that led to Mr Miller's death.

Fellow New Zealander Daniel Maxwell, is said to have asked "do you want to see something amusing?", before challenging Mr Miller to a fight.

The more than 600 days spent by Renata in pre-sentence custody were declared as time already served.
